Hillsborough is an in-depth, moving account of Britain’s worst sporting disaster, in which 96 men, women and children were killed, hundreds injured and thousands traumatised.

Beginning with that fateful day, 15 April 1989, the film details the horror of the tragedy, told through the experiences of those directly involved: fans, survivors, family members and police officers. Many speak publicly for the first time.

It captures the horror of the crush on the terraces, revealing the prejudices held by the police towards football fans. It exposes the police commanders’ abject failure in leadership as the tragedy unfolded, and their deceit and determination to deflect responsibility for their failures in crowd management onto those who survived.

The documentary exposes the lack of dignity shown to bereaved families as they arrived in Sheffield to identify their loved ones laid out in body bags on a gymnasium floor. It considers the impact of the orchestrated vilification of fans in the media and, as a consequence, their public condemnation. By interviewing those involved, it recounts the 27-year campaign for justice fought on behalf of the 96 who died.

Laut, groß, blutig: Das Derby zwischen Wydad und Raja Casablanca ist nichts für Kuchenblockfans. Heute treffen die Rivalen wieder aufeinander. Wir waren im Dezember 2015 beim Hinspiel vor Ort.

Ende Dezember 2015 waren Andreas Bock und Paul Lehr in Casablanca, um das Derby Raja gegen Wydad zu besuchen. Vier Tage begleiteten sie die Ultragruppe von Wydad. Der Artikel erschien in der Februar-Ausgabe von 11FREUNDE.

»Noch ein Foto und du bist tot.«

Am 20. Dezember 2015, wenige Minuten vor Anpfiff des Derbys Wydad gegen Raja Casablanca, steht ein Mann vor der Curva Nord und meint es ernst. Jedenfalls lacht niemand, als er diesen Satz sagt, und so scheint es ratsamer, die Kamera wieder einzustecken.

Sie nennen den Mann Turan, er ist einer der führenden Köpfe der Wydad-Ultras. Später wird man erfahren, dass Turan einfach ein bisschen verrückt sei. Er möge keine Journalisten und nehme Drogen. Man solle ihn ignorieren. Aber in diesem Moment ist das schwer möglich, in diesem Augenblick fragt man sich, wo der verdammte Notausgang ist. Willkommen beim Derby Wydad gegen Raja. Willkommen in Casablanca.

Fußball ist überall auf der Welt ein Sport der großen Gefühle, eine Sache, in der Hass auf besondere Weise zelebriert wird. Es gibt wortmächtige Weisheiten über Rivalitäten, die berühmteste stammt von Bill Shankly: »Einige Leute denken, Fußball sei eine Frage von Leben und Tod. Ich kann Ihnen versichern, dass es viel ernster ist.«

While world football may be dominated by European and South American nations, the Middle East and North Africa have consistently made football news over the years. Whether it was Algeria’s shocking win over West Germany in the 1982 World Cup, or the fact that some of the biggest clubs in Europe have owners from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

In his latest book The Turbulent World of Middle East Soccer, James M. Dorsey, a journalist and a senior fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, looks at football in the region, which overlaps with politics, protests and gender rights.

32 injured in clashes between security forces and football supporters

Al-Ahly‘s football department blames sports leaders for not taking needed precautions

The casualty toll has risen from 29 to 32 following clashes between football fans and security forces at Borg Al-Arab stadium on Wednesday, Egyptian Ambulance Organisation (EAO) said in an official statement.

EAO medical respondents treated 22 fans in front of the stadium and transferred 10 others to a nearby hospital in Amerya, according to the statement. “The numbers are still preliminary,” the statement read.

Security forces fired teargas at a group of fans attempting to enter the stadium without tickets and the resulting gas led to their suffocation, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior. “They were persuaded to leave. Instead, they insisted to enter which cause police to fire teargas at them,” the ministry said in a statement.

Es war wieder ein Deutscher. Mario Gomez dürfte Recep Tayyip Erdogan den Fußballabend mit seinen zwei Toren gegen Bursaspor verleidet haben. Gomez stürmt als Söldner für Besiktas, den Verein in Istanbul, dessen Gefolge für den Präsidenten noch weniger übrig hat als für jeden, der Fenerbahçe oder Galatasaray für eine geistige Heimat hält.

Als Erdogan das neue Stadion von Besiktas einzuweihen hatte, kam er einen Tag vor dem Eröffnungsspiel. Vor leeren Rängen schritt er hoheitsvoll über den Rasen, führte einen Anstoß aus und ließ sich feiern. Er trug einen Fanschal von Besiktas. Zum Spiel selbst, am nächsten Abend gegen Bursaspor, waren die Ultras in entsprechender Stimmung. Es kam, wie es immer kommt, sobald der Staat sich vor dem Stadion dann noch allzu herrisch auf sein Monopol beruft, Gewalt zu demonstrieren. Eskalieren, Einkesseln, Verhaften. Wasserwerfer. Tränengas.

Die Carsi sind damit vertraut. Den Ultras von Besiktas tritt die Polizei seit den Ereignissen vom Gezi-Park noch feindseliger und energischer entgegen. “Carsi sind gegen alles außer Atatürk”, sagen die Carsi. Sie sind auch dagegen, dass alles, was allen gehört, in Geld für wenige verwandelt wird.

Recognizing fan power, Egypt’s regime boosts calls for security sector reform

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s brutal regime in rare gestures towards his opponents has twice this year recognized the potential street power of his country’s militant, street battle-hardened soccer fans. In doing so, the regime has implicitly acknowledged that security forces rather than the fans were responsible for past violence and provided ammunition for calls for wholesale reform of law enforcement.

The Sisi regime’s latest gesture came this week when for the first time in five years allowed thousands of members of the Ultras White Knights (UWK), hard-line supporters of storied Cairo club Al Zamalek FC who played a key role in the 2011 toppling of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and protests against subsequent governments, to attend an African Champions League match against Algeria’s Mouloudia Olympique de Bejaia better known as MO Bejaia.

The decision to allow UWK into the stadium followed warnings by the group and its arch rival, Ultras Ahlawy, the militant support group of Al Ahli SC, that they would defy the interior ministry’s ban, implicitly risking yet another deadly clash with security forces.

Fußballfans im Fokus der Behörden

Die Kritik an der Arbeit sächsischer Behörden reißt nicht ab. Wie auch der aktuelle Fall anschaulich belegt, scheint in Teilen der sächsischen Polizeiführung jegliches Verständnis für Grundrechte abhanden gekommen zu sein. Das zumindest lässt sich aus den Antworten des Sächsischen Innenministers Markus Ulbig (CDU) auf eine Kleine Anfrage von Valentin Lippmann (Die Grünen) schließen. Dieser musst auf Nachfrage einräumen, dass die Polizei eine bis dato vollkommen unbekannte Datei „Gewalttäter Sport“ führt, in der in Sachsen fast 600 Personen erfasst sind. Allein in Dresden betrifft dies 328 Personen aus dem Umfeld der Fußballfanszene der SG Dynamo Dresden, denen die Polizei vorwirft, gewaltbereit zu sein.

Neben Dynamo wurden in der Liste nach Informationen der Freien Presse auch Personen von anderen sächsischen Fußballvereinen aufgeführt. Auf den FSV Zwickau (154) folgen die beiden Leipziger Vereine Lokomotive Leipzig (72) und die BSG Chemie Leipzig (19).

Mehrere Hundert Menschen skandieren fremdenfeindliche Parolen auf dem Brüsseler Börsenplatz. Die Polizei setzt Wasserwerfer ein. Es kommt zu Rangeleien mit alkoholisierten Störern. Derweil fahndet die Polizei weiter nach mehreren mutmaßlichen Terroristen.

Mehrere Hunderte Hooligans haben das Gedenken an die Brüsseler Terroropfer auf dem Börsenplatz im Zentrum der belgischen Hauptstadt gestört. Auf Fernsehbildern waren teilweise vermummte Personen zu sehen. Nach Angaben der Nachrichtenagentur Belga umfasste die Gruppe etwa 450 teils alkoholisierte Menschen. Es kam zu Rangeleien mit Polizisten, die mit Schlagstöcken, Schildern und Helmen ausgerüstet waren. Die Sicherheitskräfte setzten Wasserwerfer ein und nahmen rund 10 Tatverdächtige vorübergehend fest.

“Why the f*** do Karpaty need a monkey?”

Those were the chants that greeted Karpaty Lviv’s Nigerian striker Gabriel Okechukwu as he stepped onto the pitch in the 79^th minute during his team’s 1-0 loss to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on Sunday at Arena Lviv. Okechukwu signed for Karpaty on March 1 and has been subject to racist abuse—from his own club’s supporters—in every match since. Karpaty’s traveling supporters started the ‘monkey’ chant in Odessa in their away match against Chornomorets as soon as he made his debut, and did the same last week against Dynamo Kyiv when they saw him warming up on the touchline.

The Response by Karpaty Fans Has Been Predictable

The response from the club and the supporters has been depressingly predictable. The leader of the Karpaty ultras group ‘Zavzhdy Virni’ (Always Loyal) Taras Pavliv claimed that the chants were not directed at Okechukwu, but rather at the club’s general director Yuriy Dyachuk-Stavytskyi. According to Pavliv, the supporters are protesting the club’s policies regarding transfers and the youth system. The club’s director is trying to turn a profit from these mysterious transfers, Pavliv argues, while the promises of giving youth players a chance are unfulfilled.

Morocco bans ‘ultra’ fan groups following riot

Local authorities in Morocco have banned the activities of ‘ultra’ fan groups following Saturday’s riot in Casablanca that left three people dead and 54 reported to have been injured.

Rival Raja Casablanca fan groups fought among themselves after their side’s 2-1 victory over Chabab Rif Al Hoceima.

It is understood fans will still be allowed at the Mohammed V stadium.

However, items such as flares and banners are expected to be prohibited under the new ruling.

Three-time African champions Raja and its fans have come under intense pressure since the trouble.

Two fans were reported dead on Saturday before a third succumbed to his injuries earlier this week.

“To ensure the safety of citizens and preserve public order, it has been decided to ban the activities of all the ‘ultras’ who act outside of the law,” said Casablanca’s prefecture in a statement.
